Chaim Cohn was born on January 6, 1817 in Warsaw, District IV. He wa s the eldest child of Dawid Cohn and Szajna Ruchla nee Jeszurin. He w as married in Kempen (Kepno) on December 29, 1835 to Rozalia (Reitze ) Landau, daughter of Rabbi Josef Samuel Landau and Dina Elke nee Pere tz. In the Kempen records Chaim's given name is Jochem, Jochim, or Jo achim. According to his marriage record he was 24 years old at the ti me of his marriage (but he was actually 18, almost 19). He was a si k merchant like his father Dawid Cohn. According to one source (a bio graphical dictionary entry for his son Jozua) Chaim apparently also us ed the kinui "Hermann."
Chaim and Rozalia later moved to Vienna, Austria, perhaps in the 1870s , probably taking their younger children with them. Rozalia is burie d in the Jewish Cemetery in the town of Modling, 14 km, south of Vienn a. But it is not certain if they lived there or if she simply was bur ied in Modling but died in Vienna, since the name Chaim Cohn occurs i n an old Viennese address book from the years 1870-1881 (with a gap i n 1875). Her tombstone inscription in Hebrew confirms that she i sth e daughter of Rabbi Yosef Shmuel HaLevi Landau of Kempren, son of Rabb i Israel Jonah Halevi Landau, and that she is the wife of Chaim Cohn f rom Warsaw. According to the Hebrew date she died on 19 Av 1881. Th e Gregorian date of her death is July 27, 1880. But the Gregorian dat e July 27 agrees with the Hebrew date 19 Av only in 1880. So she prob ably died int the year 1880 [5640].
In the Zentalfriedhof in Vienna, there is a grave of a man named Chai m Cohn, originally from Warsaw. He died on April 9, 1882 and was 64 y ears old. He was buried on April 12, 1882. His address at the tim e o fhis death was Herrengasse 35, in Wahring (a suburb of Vienna) whi ch seems to be the address of the Jewish Hospital. This corresponds w ith Chaim Cohn, the husband of Rozalia, and his age fits exactly. S o it is very likely him, since Chaim's wife Rozalia was buried in Modl ing near Vienna. Furthermore, there is no other "Chaim Cohn" in the W arsaw records found in JRI-Poland who could be a possible match for th is Chaim Cohn from Warsaw buried in Vienna.
