Communist revolutioinary and literary critic. Born in Yakutsk, Siberi a. She was married to Grigory Usievich, a Russian communist revolutio nary whom she met in Switzerland. They both entered Russia in April o f 1917 in th efamous "sealed train" with Lenin and other revolutionari es. They took part in the October Revolution and the Civil War betwee n the Reds and the Whites. Grigory died in the Civil War in 1918 an d was considered a revolutionary hero. Elena worked as an interrogato r for the Cheka, (the first secret police organization in the Soviet U nion and forerunner of the NKVD and KGB). During World War II she col laborated on a literary journal with the Polish communist author Wand a Wasilewska, whose novels she translated into Russian. Elena was th e author of several books, numerous articles, and was a major literar y critic in the Soviet Union. Her books include: Pisateli i deistvit elnost (1936), Vladimir Mayakovsky (1950) and Paths of Aritistic Trut h (1958).
