General Notes: Wife - Teresa (Hadasa) Cohn
She was married to Markus Silberstein, one of the wealthiest industria lists in Lodz, owner of a large textile factory. They were married i n Warsaw on September 7, 1865. Markus was born in Praszk/Bedzin distr ict on March 19, 1833, and died in Nice, France on March 3, 1899, bu t was buried in the Bracka Street cemetery in Lodz. His parents wer e Joachim Silberstein (d. 1885) and Adels Glucksman (Gliksman). Marku s and Teresa were generous philanthropists in Lodz and Markus was invo lved with many societies and organizations. In 1884 Markus donated hi s collection of Jewish book to the Tlomackie Street Synagogue in Warsa w.
The Silbersteins were also patrons of the arts, and interested their c hildren in the arts. They owned a collection of paintings and gave fi nancial support to the Jewish painter Samuel Hirszenberg (1865-1908) a nd the Jewish architect Adolf Zeligson (1867-1919). In 1894 they boug ht a country estate in Lisowice, near Brzeziny where Samuel Hirszenber g used to visit and paint landscapes. The palace on the property wa s rebuilt under the directoin of the Adolf Zeligson. He also designe d many buildings for the Silberstein family including their factory , a private home and their family tomb in the New Jewish Cemetery. Sa muel Hirszenberg painted a full length portrait of Teresa Silberstei n in 1902 which survives in th ePolsih Museum in Rapperswil, Switzerla nd.
It's possible that Teresa marred again after Markus's death, because t here is a marriage record of Teresa Zilbersztajn and Eliia Kopcow in 1 904 in Lodz.
After the tragic death of her son Mieczyslaw in 1907, Teresa left Lod z and went to live on the family estate in Lisowice where she died. S he was buried in Lodz with her husband in the large Silberstein famil y tomb.
