From his obituary [Detroit Free Press]:
Arthur M. Sills, whose passion was wheeling and dealing in the real es tate business, died of cancer of the pancreas Wenesday [February 7th , 2003] at his home in Bloomfield Hills. He was 77 and was called Arc hie. He owned First Holding Corporation and FH Management, both in We st Bloomfield. Mr. Sills worked until the day he died, and his daught er Susie, who worked with him, will continue the business. When he wa sn't actually on the job, he'd drive around in his convertible lookin g at property. "When we'd go for a ride when we were kids, we'd loo k for a piece of property," his daughter said. "He worked because h e enjoyed it. It was love to him. "After everybody closed and he cou ldn't possibly look at any other property, he would go to the Jewish C ommunity Center and work out, and he had many friendships there. "O f course, I'm sure when they were running on the track they talked abo ut property." Mr. Sills was born in New York and came to Detroit whe n he was about 10 years old. He graduated from Central High School an d went to Wayne State University for a semester before he was drafte d into the Army in 1943 during World War II and sent to Europe. "He d rove an ambulance and couldn't stand the sight of blood," his daughte r said. "He also didn't have a driver's license." At home after th e war, he went to the University of Michigan for two years, then wen t to work for his family's retail clothing business, Wonderful Tots an d Teens, on the east side. "My mother made him go to law school, an d he went to the Detroit College of Law," his daughter said. Armed w ith his degree, he joined the law practgive of a man who was heavily i nvolved in real estate work - and the die was cast. Besides his daugh ter, survivors include his wife of 54 years, Rhoda; another daughter , Claudia; a son Douglas, and four grandchildren. His son Lawrence di ed in the 1987 Northwest Airlines [flight 255] plane crash near Metr o Airport. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at the Dorfman Chapel , 30440 Twelve Mile Road, Farmington Hills, with burial in Clover Hil l Park Cemetery, Birmingham.
