General Notes: Wife - Ita Pines
Like her mother she was a founder of Ezrat Nashim and an active worke r for women's charities. She took over the runnign of Beit Hamachse . She guided it through difficult times and saved it when the Turks w anted to close it during the First World War. Among her charitable ac tivities: she took care of the sick during the typus epidemic, provid ed food and medicine for starving Yemenite famililes and the sick in t he Mishkanot neighborhood. She received the M.B.E. award (Member of t he British Empire) by the British, but later returned it as a protes t during the Arab revolts of 1936-1939. Her husband, David Yellin, li kewise returned his M.B.E.
David Yellin's father, Joshua Yellin, was originally from Poland and h is mother was from the well-known Sasson family of Baghdad. David Yel lin was the founder of the Hebrew Teachers Siminary in Jerusalem an d a lecturer on medieval literature at the Hebrew University. He wa s also a member of the Ottoman Parliament (in 1913) and was exiled t o Damascus for his Zionist activities. He was a promoter of Hebrew a s a spoken language and also edited his father-in-law's writings.
