Yavetz, Zeev

  General Notes:

He was a Rabbi, author, and historian. He moved to Eretz Yisrael in 1 888 settling in Zichron Yaakov where he worked as a teacher. He was a ctive in the revival of Hebrew as a modern spoken language, together w ith his brother-in-law and relative, Yechiel Michel Pines, and Elieze r Ben Yehuda. He also initiated the custon of planting trees on Tu B' Shvat when he took his students out to plant trees on this holiday i n 1890. The custom quickly spread. It was adopted by the Jewish Nati onal Fund in 1903 and by the Jewish Teachers Union in 1908 and is no w a national tradition in Israel.

In 1894 Yavetz returned to Europe. In Vilna he participated in the fo undation of the Mizrachi party for religious Zionists. He edited th e movement's newspaper, Ha-Mizrachi, from 1903-1904, served on the par ty's Board of Directors, and also wrote the first statement outlinin g the party's purpose. He later moved to Germany and finally settle d in London where he wrote his 14-volume history of Israel, Toldot Yis rael. The moshav (settlement), Kfar Yavetz, founded in 1932 as a kibb utz, was named in his honor.

Zeev Yavetz was married twice. His forst wife was Feiga Toibe Pines , whom he married in 1866. She was a daugher of Meir Yosef Pines, wh o was a brother of Noach Pines (the husband of Hinda Cohn, daughter o f Wolf Michel Cohn and Sora Rochel Cohn). Feiga Toibe died the next y ear, July 29, 1867 and is buried in the Warsaw Jewish Cemetary. Her f ather, Meir Yosef Pines, is also buried in the Warsaw Jewish Cemetery.

Zeev Yavetz's second wife was Golda Pines, daughter of Noach Pines an d Hinda Cohn (daughter of Wolf Michel cohn and Sora Rochel Cohn). Gol da was born on December 8, 1853 and died on February 10, 1912.

Zeev next married Feiga Toibe Pines, daughter of Meir Yosef Pines and Unknown, in 1866. (Feiga Toibe Pines died on Jul 29, 1867.)
