Jakob Cohn was the fourth son of Dawid Cohn and Szajna Ruchla nee Jesz urin. He was born in Warsaw on March 12, 1825. He was married twice . His first wife was Mayta Liebman from Brody. They were married i n Zamosc on March 9, 1845. Mayta was a daughter of Szmul Liebman, a m erchant in Brody, and his wife Czarna. Jakob Cohn and Mayta lived i n Bordy and Mayta had at least two stillborn children. The first, a f emale, was born and died on May3, 1846. The second, a male, died on C otober 9, 1848. Mayta herself died a few days later on October 12, 18 48. This information comes from the All Galicia Database of the websi te Gesher Galicia.

Jakob Cohn took part in the revolution of 1848 (in Polish: Wiosna Lud ow [Spring of Nations]), in Galicia. According to an article by one o f his descendants, Helena Balicka-Kozlowska, he then had to flee fro m Galicia and so he returned to Warsaw. She also writes that he wa s a grain merchant while living in Galicia.

Jakob's second wife was Paulina (Pessa) Halpern [Heilpern] (born 1836) . They were married on August 4, 1857 in Warsaw. She was also from B rody and was a daughter of Pinkus Halpern and Chana Frajds nee Halpern . According to the book Udzial Zydow w Walce o niepodleglosc Polski ( 1938) by Janusz Konrad Urbach (page 133) her brother Izydor Heilpern , who was a participant in the January 1863-64 Uprising, was born in B ordy.

Jakob Cohn died on October 8, 1871 in Warsaw and is buried in the Wars aw Jewish Cemetery. His tombstone contains an engraving of the symbo l of the kohanim, two hands in the form of a blessing, and on the bac k the inscription of a Hebrew poem compsoed by his brother Tobiasz Coh n. Jakob Cohn and Paulina nee Halpern had at leasst five children.


Jakob married Mayta Liebman, daughter of Szmul Liebman and Czarna [maiden name unknown], on Mar 9, 1845 in Zamosc, Poland. (Mayta Liebman was born in Brody, Galicia, Poland and died on Oct 12, 1848.)


Jakob next married Paulina (Pessa Heilpern) Halpern, daughter of Pinkus Halpern and Chana Frajds Halpern, on Aug 4, 1857 in Warszawa, Poland. (Paulina (Pessa Heilpern) Halpern was born in 1836 in Brody, Galicia, Poland.)
