Influential pedagogue who promoted new theories about educatin. Priva te secretary for Prince Max von Baden. He founded a boarding school a t the Prince's castle near Lake Constance called Schule Schloss Salem . After speaking out publicly against Hitler he was imprisoned for fi ve days. He was released due to an appeal of the British Prime Minist er Ramsay MacDonald. In July 1933 he moved to Britain where he founde d a school at Gordonstoun, Elgin, Morayshire, in Scotland. In 1945 h e converted to Christianity (Church of England). He lived for many ye ars in Britain but returned to Germany in 1953 living in Hermannsberg . He died in Ravensburg and was buried in Salem.
