General Notes: Husband - Adolf (Abram) Jakub Cohn

(According to some sources he died in St. Petersburg) (His precise bi rth date, and the fact that his Hebrew name was Abram, comes from th e book: Borowksi, Stanislaw. Szkola Glowna Warszawska 1862-1869: Wy dzial Prawa i Administracji. Warsaw, 1937, p. 291).

Lawyer and journalist. He attended the Szkola Rabinow [Rabbinic Schoo l] in Warsaw and later wrote a history of this school. After this h e studied law and administration at the Szkola Glowna [The Centeral Sc hool]. He was one of the founders of the periodical Jutrzenda [Dawn] , the first major Polish-language Jewish newspaper in Poland, and wa s a regular contributor to the paper which succeeded it, Izraelita. A s well as articles he wrote some poems in Polish which were publishe d in Jutrzenda and Izraelita. He also wrote for other Polish-languag e periodicals and was a co-founder of the journal Przeglad Sadowy [Cou rt Review] and founder of Gazeta Kolejowy [Railway Gazette]. He oppos ed Socialism and published articles criticizing it. From 1895 to 190 5 he lived in St. Petersburg where he served as secretary of the Centr al Committee of the ICA (Jewish Colonization Association) founded by B aron Maurice de HIrsch. IN 1905 he returned to Warsaw and resumed hi s work for Izraelita. He wrote several works on law and translated so me other books into Polsih including Co to jest sztuka? [What is Art? ] (1901) by Leo Tolstoy. He also wrote a history of the Rabbinic Scho ol in Warsaw, published in Z dziejow gminy starozakonnych w Warszawi e w XIX stuleciu: Szkolnictow, Vol 1. (1907).
