He was a well known gynecologist. He studied at the universities of B reslau, Wurzburg, and Berlin. From 1874 to 1876 he taught gynecolog y in Breslau. In 1876 he began lecturing in gynecology at the Univers ity of Berlin and was appointed a full professor in 1893. Together wi th his brother Theodor he opened a gynecolocgical clinic [Frauenklinik ] in Berlin in 1892 which was very successful and enjoyed an internati onal reputation. He conducted research on gynecology and wrote severa l works on the subject.

He was active in German Jewish community affairs and served as a deleg ate to the conference of Jewish communiities of Germany. He was a co- founder of the Akademie fur die Wissenschaft des Judentums and the Kur se fur auslandische Studierende. Leopold was also a Zionist. He prom oted colonization in Palestine for over twenty years and was a sponso r of the national library in Jerusalem.

The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia states: "He was a descendant of Rab bi Ezekiel Landau."

Leopold was married to Johanna Jacoby, who came from a wealthy bankin g family in Berlin.
